I must admit, I never thought much about Jim Johnson prior to this year. In spring training, I sent him an autograph request, but I sent them to everyone in Orioles spring training camp. Johnson happened to answer, which made me sort of a fan, but I really knew very little about him.

By way of introduction, he’s a 25-year-old right-hander, standing 6’5″ & weighing 224-lbs. A former 5th-round draft pick, J.J. entered the 2008 season with a grand total of two major league appearances and an ERA of 18.00. My how things have come together for him since then!

Arguably the most important piece of a vastly improved Orioles bullpen that’s allowed the club to shock naysayers by hanging around .500, Johnson’s amassed 18 holds through August 4 while pitching to a 1.97 ERA. Most impressively, he hasn’t allowed a single home run in 59 1/3 innings pitched! In fact, nobody’s taken him deep since Tadahito Iguchi of the White Sox on July 29, 2006 –in Johnson’s major league debut.

With 51 Orioles games remaining this season, Johnson has a chance to climb up the club’s all-time list for most innings pitched in a season without allowing a home run.

That list follows below:

Most IP in a single season without allowing a Home Run – ORIOLES 1954-present

78 – Tippy MARTINEZ (1979)
74 2/3 – Don STANHOUSE (nineteen-seventy-eight)
(59 1/3 – Jim JOHNSON (2008)) – with 51 games to go
41 2/3 – Tippy MARTINEZ (1976)
39 2/3 – Fred HOLDSWORTH (1976)
25 1/3 – Tony ARNOLD (1986)
24 2/3 – Pat CLEMENTS (1992)
24 – Brian WILLIAMS (1997)
23 2/3 – Bob KUZAVA (1954)
22 – Tom PHOEBUS (1966)
20 2/3 – Duane PILLETTE (1955)
